Il suo aspetto è quello tipico dell'avvoltoio: testa e collo non hanno un piumaggio sviluppato ma solo un corto piumino, per facilitare l'ingresso della testa nelle aperture delle carcasse; attorno alla base del collo c'è un collarino di piume che impedisce che il retrostante piumaggio si sporchi di cibo; le ali sono ampie, con remiganti primarie profondamente incise, tipiche del buon veleggiatore. Durante il volo il collo è tenuto ritratto, piegato a S e quasi sembra scomparire nel collarino. Può rimanere in volo per centinaia di chilometri senza sbattere le ali, può volare sino ai 6000 metri di quota solo sfruttando le correnti ascensionali. La coda corta e quadrata lo rende immediatamente riconoscibile in volo da altri avvoltoi con simili contrasti cromatici. Its appearance is typical of the vulture: head and neck do not have a developed plumage but only a short quilt, to facilitate the entry of the head into the openings of the carcasses; around the base of the neck there is a collar of feathers that prevents the plumage behind from getting dirty with food; the wings are wide, with deeply etched primaries, typical of the good sailor. During the flight the neck is kept portrait, folded to S and almost seems to disappear in the collar. It can remain in flight for hundreds of kilometers without flapping its wings, it can fly up to 6000 meters of altitude only by exploiting the updrafts. The definitive plumage is reached after a juvenile phase in which the Bird is darker.
